With spring in full bloom, California State Parks and Railtown 1897 State Historic Park (SHP) is proud to provide guests with a unique opportunity to experience spring wildflowers from aboard a train pulled by the “Movie Star Locomotive” Sierra No. 3. While the Park is open daily, special Wildflower Train Ride was offered on April 11 and is available this coming Saturday April 18.
Prior to boarding the train, passengers have the opportunity to learn about the wildflowers of California’s Sierra Nevada foothills during a special presentation from interpretive rangers from the Bureau of Reclamation’s New Melones’ Lake. The rangers continue their presentation during the train ride while Railtown docents in period costume and historic railway worker uniforms assist passengers and answer railroad related questions.
After looking at flowers ranging from Indian Paintbrush to California Golden poppies and Monkey flowers from vintage rail cars, riders have an opportunity mid-ride to climb off the train and view lupine and other flowers up close along the tracks. As a special treat, steam rail fans get to watch Engine 3 as she is put to bed in the round house at the end of the run.
